Friday Refresh - The Power of Appreciation

Hey there!

I can practically smell spring coming, and I can’t wait! While we hang in this limbo between winter and spring, it’s the perfect time to practice the art of appreciation. On my daily walks with Thor & Lulu, I’ve noticed the last icicle slipping off the window, more daylight each evening, and green buds emerging on the trees.

This season represents one of nature’s most profound transitions and reminds us to appreciate—and truly notice—the little things.

The Power of Appreciation

Did you know the word “appreciate” comes from Latin meaning both “to value” and “to add value to”? Every time you notice something beautiful, you simultaneously recognize its worth and increase it. Pretty cool, right?

The Not-So-Small Small Things

Like you, I juggle to-do lists, work deadlines, and family needs—the 32 tabs open in my brain and on my computer! Sometimes it feels like I’m racing past life at 90 MPH. But I’m learning those “small things” aren’t small at all:

• Quiet moments with my husband, simply holding hands
• My teenagers still (occasionally) seeking my advice—even if they pretend they don’t need it
• Lulu, our mini Australian Shepherd, purring like a cat when I snuggle her (I’m convinced she was a cat in a past life!)
• Sipping coffee on a quiet Saturday morning while bird-watching from my chair

These aren’t moments to race past—they’re the gems we need to appreciate. By valuing them, we add value to our lives.

Create three 30-second “noticing pauses” each day this weekend. Set an alarm if you must! Stop whatever you’re doing, breathe deeply, and notice something beautiful, comforting, or joy-giving in your surroundings.
