Friday Refresh - National Fragrance Day
Hey there!
Today is National Fragrance Day, and how could I let it pass without talking about one of my favorite subjects? I’m constantly fascinated by how our sense of smell influences mood, energy, and even memory. Below are a few amazing facts about the power of our olfactory system!
🕰️ Can’t Remember? Your Nose Does!
When you smell something, your olfactory system sends signals directly to the limbic system—your brain’s emotional center. No other sense gets this VIP treatment, which is why certain scents can trigger immediate emotional responses or super-vivid memories.
Fun fact: Smell is the only fully developed sense a fetus has in the womb and remains the most developed sense in kids until about age 10. Those early connections make scent–memory links incredibly powerful.
🌈 Your Built-In Mood Enhancer
Different scents literally change brain activity—scientists have measured it with EEGs! For example:
- Citrus (think our Clementine & Lime) can boost mood and alertness.
- Lavender (like Sea Salt & Lavender) promotes relaxation and calm.
- Vanilla (hello Bourbon & Vanilla) reduces anxiety and stress, creating a sense of well-being.
🏆 This Week’s Smell Challenge
Your nose is like a muscle that strengthens with daily “workouts.” This weekend, try this: on your next walk, consciously identify five different scents around you. Notice how each makes you feel or what memories it triggers—you might be surprised by what you discover!
Have an amazing, fragrant weekend!
