Friday Refresh - Healing Powers of Water

Apr 11, 2025by Kecia Hielscher

Hey there!

Next week I’ll be trading my usual routine for the wild beauty of the Oregon Coast. If you’ve never experienced it, this place is magical—a rugged landscape where you can witness both the breathtaking beauty and raw power of the Pacific Ocean up close.

Thinking about this trip got me reflecting on water and the science behind its remarkable healing properties for our minds and bodies.

💙 The “Blue Mind” Effect

That calm, peaceful feeling you get around water? Scientists call it “blue mind.” Being near water literally changes brain-wave patterns, lowers stress hormones, and boosts those feel-good neurotransmitters. No wonder we dream of beach vacations when we’re overwhelmed!

🌬️ The Ocean’s Medicine Cabinet

Sea air isn’t just refreshing—it’s like breathing nature’s wellness cocktail. Misty ocean spray carries tiny particles of iodine, salt, and magnesium that can help clear your respiratory system. Many people with asthma or allergies report easier breathing by the ocean (though it’s certainly not a substitute for medical care).

😴 Water: Your Sleep’s Secret Weapon

Struggling with sleep? Water environments might be your answer. The rhythmic sound of waves is the perfect backdrop for deeper, more restful slumber (those ocean-sound machines know what’s up!). Plus, negative ions in sea air may boost oxygen absorption, helping body and brain relax more deeply at night.

💧 Your Refresh Challenge

Can’t make it to the coast this week? Bring a bit of “blue mind” into daily life:

  • Take a mindful shower, focusing on the sensation of water on your skin.
  • Sit by a local fountain or creek during lunch.
  • Add ocean sounds to your meditation or bedtime routine.

Wishing you peace and tranquility with every new wave,

Kecia

P.S. What’s your favorite spot along the Oregon Coast? I’d love to hear!
